The Bisons are back on Bornholm

The Bisons are back on Bornholm

Originally shared by +Holidays on Bornholm

In 2012 we bought seven European bison from a Polish primeval forest and let them into a 200-hectare paddock in Almindingen. It is the first time in 2,500 years, that the Europe's heaviest land mammals are back in Denmark. Not since man destroyed them in the Iron Age.
Today you can go for walk in the forest, you might find their tracks and follow it and if you are quiet, you will be able to get very close and see them. If they get too curious, turn around and RUN!

Art

Throughout history, painters have been fascinated by the extraordinary light on Bornholm. Towards the end of the 19th century, it attracted names like Zartmann, Drachmann and Bornholm-born Michael Ancher. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Bornholm School was founded, featuring artists such as Weie, Rude, Isakson and Høst. You can see their colourful works on display at Bornholm's Art Museum in Rø and there is a museum dedicated solely to Oluf Høst, who was born and raised on Bornholm, in Gudhjem, you can also enjoy th garden and have a nice cup of tea

Bornholm in the snow – ski slopes, skating and cross-country skiing

Bornholm in the snow – ski slopes, skating and cross-country skiing

How about trying Bornholm’s ski slopes between Østerlars and Gudhjem – complete with wood cabins, ski lifts, ski hire, lift passes and snow cannon? If you are bringing your children to Bornholm for the winter holiday, visit the ice rink in Rønne’s main square, Store Torv. The exhilarating skating is completely free, if you bring your own skates. Of course, you can also hire skates in the square (while the normal shops are open). The whole family can also enjoy on cross-country skiing tour. The Danish Nature Agency Bornholm makes cross-country tracks in cooperation with the Regional Municipality of Bornholm, and Bornholms Skii Friends and there are routes in Rø and Vestermarie plantations, as well as in Almindingen.

Denmark is without a doubt one of the world’s most overlooked diving spots

Denmark is without a doubt one of the world’s most overlooked diving spots

Admittedly, visibility and water temperature are rarely exactly what you might hope to find in the tropics, but Denmark boasts such a variety of marine life that even experienced divers can be amazed time and again.
Bornholm is an exciting place for divers. It is one of very few places in Denmark where you will find underwater cliffs.
Around Hammershus you can dive in the caves. The seawater around the island is very low in salt content, which makes diving here rather different from many other places. The water is often both deep and clear, with a great wealth of animal life.

See the cranes dance

See the cranes dance

The first time you hear a crane "sing" it`s almost like a sound from a distant prehistoric time, where large and unknown animals were moving around on the ground.
Having been absent from Denmark for approximately 100 years breeding crane are here again. You can hear the resounding screams and see the dance in late March or very early spring.

Flour, bread, pasta, biscuits…Bornholm has it all

Flour, bread, pasta, biscuits…Bornholm has it all

Grains and flour from Bornholm
Several grains are grown on Bornholm. Thanks to the island’s warm climate and many hours of sunshine you can grow grains that would not normally grow in Danish fields.

Valsemøllen mill
The Valsemøllen mill by Aakirkeby is a Dutch windmill built in 1867. The mill grinds good corn from Bornholm fields, which is then milled on slow-moving hammer stools with a large hammer length that prevents the flour from heating and gluten structures from becoming damaged. The Valsemøllen mill produces wheat flour, rye, spelt and durum – also organically.

Pasta from Bornholm
Outside Svaneke farming couple Finn and Susanne made their dreams come true by creating Bornholm pasta. Finn proved that durum wheat could be successfully grown and harvested on Bornholm’s warm fields and the couple currently produce both fresh and dry quality pasta made from the fine Bornholm durum wheat together with delicious pasta-pesto.
