Kadeau – Gourmet Dining on Bornholm

Kadeau - Gourmet Dining On Bornholm

If you are a foodie then no trip to Bornholm is complete without a visit to Kadeau.

The restaurant is rated as the 7th best in Europe by the famous Opinionated About Dining website in their top 100 European restaurants list (www.opinionatedaboutdining.com/2017/eu.html) and to be honest, it could be higher.

The dishes that they serve can only be described as hardcore food porn.

Kadeau - Gourmet Dining On Bornholm

It’s no surprise that it has a Michelin star, which for a restaurant that is little more than a renovated ice cream hut is quite amazing.

They cultivate their own herbs, vegetables, fruits, and berries, and they collaborate closely with local suppliers.

The restaurant was founded in 2007 by Nikolai Nørregaard who went on to open a sister restaurant in Copenhagen (which just received a second Michelin star last week). The Copenhagen restaurant has been voted ‘the best restaurant in the world’.

I was fortunate enough to be taken there for my last birthday and what a treat it was. The setting right on the beach is gorgeous, the service is as good as it gets and the food is out of this world. The wine list is pretty stunning too.

Fair enough, the prices are formidable but it’s not every day that you get to experience the best things in life and dining at Kadeau certainly falls into that category.

A lot of the unusual ingredients are foraged from around the island and as you can see from the photos the presentation is more imaginative than words can explain.

Dishes are served on pebbles from the beach, twigs from the forest and on beds of moss. Edible delicate flowers adorn the dishes. Everything is a taste sensation.

Kadeau - Gourmet Dining On Bornholm

Even when it comes to the bread and butter, the bread is homemade and the butter comes with a covering of burnt hay ash. Now, I know that sounds strange but it tasted divine.

Kadeau Menu - Bornholm

We went for lunch as that’s the “cheaper” option and that gives you plenty of time to sober up by lounging on the beach in the afternoon (especially handy if you are cycling there and back).

As I said at the beginning, a visit to this restaurant in a ‘must do’ activity if you are visiting Bornholm and you love food and gastro dining. You won’t be disappointed.

Where To Eat And Drink In Bornholm – My Favourite Cafe – Hasle

If we fancy popping out for a coffee and a slice of cake we head over to Hasle and the Cafe Emajoka.
It has 2 outdoor terraces both overlooking the small fishing harbour and you can drink your coffee while watching the boats come and go.

Inside there’s plenty of seating in a nicely decorated and cosy interior.

They sell tea and coffee, locally brewed beers and have a nice selection of homemade cakes.
They also sell beef burgers and the like.

Where to stay in Bornholm – News – Free Fruit And Vegetables

Free Seasonal Fruit And Veg For Our Guests

What’s growing in our garden in 2017?

For the last two years we have offered free home grown organic fruit and vegetables to our guests throughout the season.
This started in 2015 with a few small raised beds filled with some strawberry plants, a few sugar snap peas and some salads. Our guests loved that so last year we expanded with more raised beds and a 250 square metre fenced vegetable patch.
Once again the guests loved this and there was nothing better than watching couples and families heading out to the garden, basket in hand, to dig up some new potatoes, pick some runner beans or harvest a head of lettuce.
For many families this was the first time that the children had picked their own fruit and veg and we would often see parents taking photos of the kids digging up some carrots or eating strawberries straight off the plants.

This year we will again be offering free fruit and vegetables to all guests.

Everything is home grown, organically, from heirloom seeds and this year we will be trying a selection of beans, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, beetroot, kale, peas, lettuce, radishes, pumpkins and squash.

We now have a greenhouse so the tomatoes should be ready to eat earlier and their season should be longer.

On the fruit front we have cherries, blackcurrants, red currants, gooseberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. We also have a few apple trees and a pear tree.

Guests can also use the BBQ patio and al fresco dining area.

What’s on in Bornholm – Exhibitions

What’s on in Bornholm – Exhibitions

Looking for something to do on Bornholm? Well a visit to the art gallery may well fit the bill.
The Bornholm Art Museum (Bornholms Kunstmuseum) is situated on the Danish island of Bornholm, above the Sanctuary Rocks (Helligdomsklipperne) about 6 kilometres north-west of Gudhjem. The building was constructed in 1993 and enlarged in 2003. The museum’s permanent collection consists principally of paintings by artists with connections to Bornholm from the early 19th century to the present day. Special attention is given to the Bornholm school of painters which emerged at the beginning of the last century when a number of modernists, attracted to picturesque Bornholm and the tiny island of Christiansø, painted landscapes and local nature.

The permanent exhibition includes works by Edvard Weie, Karl Isakson, Olaf Rude, Kræsten Iversen, Niels Lergaard and Oluf Høst.

In addition, numerous paintings and works of sculpture present a rich picture of artistic life on Bornholm.

Covering an area of some 4,000 square meters, the museum itself is an impressive architectural achievement. Designed by architects Johan Fogh and Per Følner, it is divided into three levels as the ground the slopes down towards the sea. The galleries are situated on either side of a kind of street where water trickles down from the age-old Helligdomskilde healing spring.

Bornholm Bicycle route – Rønne-Rø-Helligdommen

Bornholm Bicycle route – Rønne-Rø-Helligdommen

Enjoy a beautiful bicycle ride on the former line of the Bornholm Railway Company.
A beautiful cycle track along the former railway line
Starting in the early 1900s, there were train services from Rønne to the villages of Sandvig, Gudhjem and Nexø. The trains drove on Bornholm until 1968 and it's on these railway sections that you are going to enjoy Bornholm. The cycle route from Rønne to Nyker follows this former line of the Bornholm Railway Company.

Experience the most beautiful rocks of Bornholm
After Klemensker you are back the old railway line, passing through the spectacular Kleven, where the path leads between steep rock walls to the lush Spellinge Bog. From the village of Rø, which used to have a station, the route runs downhill to the Bornholm Art Museum and Helligdomsklipperne (Sanctuary Rocks), some of the most beautiful rock formations on the island.

We can provide you with a lovely 3 bedroom apartment almost in the middle of the Island. See more here: www.holidaysonbornholm.com
